Romans 6:4-5
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Baptism with water points to the reality of the Holy Spirit’s baptism, which is the moment of introduction into the body of Christ. Baptism is an outward expression of an inward decision.
- Testimony
We believe Baptism is a public confession. This is why we ask people to share a brief testimony of how they came to know Christ. Please write out your testimony on a 3x5 card and be prepared to read it before your baptism. You may want to go over this with a relative, or staff member. A good outline for a testimony is found in these three statements:
- Before I became a Christian . . .
- I became a Christian when . . .
- Now that I am a Christian . . .
We also do a “yes” testimony. This is where you write out your testimony on a card, but the pastor asks you some “yes” questions so that you have the chance to verbally share your faith.
- Details
- You need to arrive 15 minutes prior to the service.
- Bring a change of clothes. You can put these in a plastic bag, which can then be used for wet clothes. Normally we have white robes to wear, but in the case of large numbers of people being baptized, you may wear a swimsuit and shirt. Sandals are a good idea.
- Bring at least one towel per person.
- The Baptism
You will enter the water and cross your arms (pastor will demonstrate). Then you will bend your knees and allow the pastor to lower you into the water, and he will guide you to stand back up.
- The Baptizer
Although our pastors are willing and eager to do the baptizing, we do encourage fathers to baptize their children. This special privilege reflects the important responsibility God places upon a father to be the pastor of his family. Sometimes people request that a special friend or family member baptize them.
We encourage this but simply ask you to please contact one of our pastors about this prior to your baptism.
